MAN TROUBLE Delightful
if unsubstantial comedy score
Before veteran director Bob Rafelson seemed to decide to start directing soft porn (recent movies include Tales of Erotica and Porn.com) he made this offbeat comedy with Jack Nicholson and Ellen Barkin about a dog trainer who falls for one of his clients (the dog's owner, not the dog itself). Rafelson showed great taste in turning to the great Georges Delerue for the score - but unfortunately, as with so many of Delerue's American movies, Man Trouble was a complete disaster both critically and commercially. His score is pretty eclectic - for the first couple of bars it sounds for all the world like a score for Truffaut but thereafter goes through a fairly wide range of styles, with some very playful comedy music that sounds a bit like Chopin or Poulenc and, needless to say, a gorgeous love theme. The problem is, there's not a whole lot to it - it's very light and fluffy stuff in the main, and when it does get a bit bigger, the comedy music can be just a little too Mickey Mousey to be entirely enjoyable. There really isn't much to say about a score like this. No fan of Delerue would fail to enjoy at least part of it, and the romantic sections should be enough to satisfy the more "easy listening" kind of film music fan, but it's a completely unsubstantial work in Delerue's career as a whole.
